History
Our non-profit GOL ILUMINADO was established in 2007 as a Goodwill Organization in support of the United Nations Office of Sport for Development and Peace. Created by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, this dynamic platform used sports as a mechanism to provide opportunities for families and children in need. Our desire to expand into all sports, passions, and professions and help evenmore people including those in and out of sport led us re-brand our organization and call it ‘Grassroots Change.’ Since 2004 we have collaborated with the United Nations in the building of a culture of peace, working as an Organization of Goodwill to assist the United Nations System with its initiatives of Development and Peace projects worldwide in the following areas:
1. Achievement of internationally agreed development goals
2. Education and training
3. Youth development and employment
4. Gender equality in education, training, and employment
5. Eliminating exclusions of people with disabilities
6. Communication and information
7. Advice on international social protection.
The GOL ILUMINADO
A Historical Event That Became Synonomous to 'Don Elias' Figueroa.
Legend has it that a ray of light pierced through the stadium stands on a dismally overcast day, illuminating an area in the penalty box at the very moment where “Don Elias” Figueroa headed the ball into the back of the net. GOL ILUMINADO was an amazing and ‘spiritual like’ event for the fans of SC International of Porto Alegre, Brazil, where Figueroa was captain and the reigning South American Player of the Year. Commentators and fans alike immediately ‘tabbed’ Figueroa’s famous goal as the “GOL ILUMINADO- the Illuminated Goal.” The thrilling 1-0 victory crowned SC International as Champions of Brazil for the first time in their history. GOL ILUMINADO was a natural name for a foundation about changing lives through legacy initiatives. It also led people to believe that anything was possible to achieve.
